Shani Reay [pronounced “Shane-ee Ray”] features on this album, in an all too rare visit to Wales. This impeccable performer, with a unique swinging vocal style and faultless technique, is captured here performing the great songs in concert, featuring a fine selection of standards from the American songbook. A class 6 piece band plus instrumental guests accompany her on this highly entertaining album, which you will play over and over.

All That Jazz

Shani, of Welsh grandparents grew up in the midlands and is now a truly international performer, but sadly a relatively infrequent visitor to these shores. Hence it was a treat to capture her in fine form with a terrific band. Notably saxophonist Julian Tucker whose fantastic lyrical solos are improvisation at its finest, and Gethin Liddington, a true grandmaster of the trumpet, and familiar figure to jazz fans.
Don’t take my word for it, listen for yourself. My personal favourites are the Cole Porter classic “ I get a kick out of you”, and George Gershwin’s immortal “Embraceable You.” Julian Tucker is in great form on both these but also check out Gethin’s haunting flugal horn work on “Cry Me A River.” As for the lady herself, she thrives in this environment, and it shows, as she brings a freshness and vitality to each of these great tracks. Open that bottle of wine, relax and enjoy.
